Go to Zillow, and look at houses for sale…especially new construction.
Go to the Bathroom first…. That is the real tell.
1. How many plug sockets near each sink? 2? !
2. Look at the sink mirror…cheap…..better is a medicine cabinet!
2. When you take a shower, are you standing ON there drain hole? Yuck.. LInear drain in shower..that is better?
3. Do you step over a 3 inch bump to get in the shower, or is a stepless…It MATTERS!!!
3. Does the shower spray you from a wall, like on SILKWOOD? Or does it fall on you, like rain?
4. Penny tile on floor…yucky grout lines…
3. Are there tubs, just waiting for a shower curtain….creepy….(new houses never include a shower curtain…just a shower head, in a tub…you do the math
4. Are all the plug sockets just “according to code”? Then the whole house will be this minimum….even if it cost $5M …. It will be crap.
5. Do the windows crank out? Again… for egress code rules…these are cheaper than sash windows that open up….CHEAP..and the cranks just break eventually…then what!
6. Does the kitchen sink have a horrible view…like of a fence? Just keep walking.
7. Then there are the invisible problems, beside cheap wiring… is it 2×4 construction? This means poor insulation, and NO window sills…! And sound carries between rooms more.
8 Is there ANY storage rooms in the entire house?? How do you keep a house clean, without storage..?
I do not know it all….but, 95% of houses being build, and remodeled, have all these shortcuts …that will HAUNT you for the rest of your life, or till you move, and pass your regrets to the next unsuspecting family…
Don’t believe me, make a game of it… fine ONE house that has good wiring, lots of sockets, thick walls, good windows…. Nice rain shower, no penny tile in shower, a linear drain, and for bonus points… a stemless shower….THEN you know the rest of the house will NOT surprise or depress you….!
Or, you can paw thru this site, and see how a GREAT house is build….no shortcuts….lots of premedited design….(YOUR 3D design…. Refined 100 times before submitting to AIA)…
I know of a great AIA in New England…world class, I should examine his houses too….but even HE could use a few tweaks, of what women want in a house….
Like a raised dishwasher,
Sockets NOT behind a couch…
Sockets in the floor, or a very open room….so you can plug in a lamp, where there are no walls…
6 extra inches of counter space behind a sink faucet….
Wide doors to get in and out of laundry rooms
A laundry room on a corner of the house, so you have light on 2 sides, views, and cheer.
A home office in the front yard, instead of a 3 car garage!
A place to wash the dog, and a place for kitty litter boxes…
A bathtub, way off on a quiet end of the house, for peace and quiet….not in the center of a room, or hallway foot traffic…really?
